Several explosions were registered in a gas depot, on Friday night near Alfarim, Sesimbra. The noise and flashes of the explosions were observed throughout the region.
Sometimes it was possible to see incandescent fragments projected on
height. The causes of this accident are still unknown, which will not have caused any victims.
On the social network Facebook, the mayor of Sesimbra, Francisco Jesús, said that there is no news of victims. According to the mayor, the explosions occurred in the Roças area, between Alfarim and Aiana de Cima.
Several residents revealed to CMTV the moments of panic they experienced at the presence of audible and felt shocks in various locations. “It looked like an atomic bomb, something impressive,” David revealed to CMTV.
At 1:30 am, operators at the site were already conducting subsequent operations to remove the remaining material from the warehouse. João Oliveira, second commander of the Sesimbra firefighters, assured the CMTV that there was no more danger of explosions. “Right now there is not enough heat load for another explosion,” he said. In total, among the firefighters, GNR and Civil Protection, 45 were operational and 21 were vehicles involved in the operation.
