The new strain of the virus is stronger and the mask may not be enough

men researchers claim that a new dominant strain of COVID-19-19 can adapt and in a short time be able to overcome ‘obstacles’ such as wearing a mask or washing continuously and disinfection hands.

Specialists from the city of Houston, Texas, in the United States, have been sequencer genomes of the virus since March and so far they have already categorized 5,085 sequences.

Not Start gives pandemic many governments, including the Portuguese, have warned citizens to maintain social distance, wash their hands regularly and wear masks.

However, one virologist suggests that the new coronavirus can start to find ways to infect people despite these preventive measures.

David Morens that works no National Institute of Allergies and Infectious Diseases (NIAID) states that the SARSCoV-2 became more contagious.

The expert told the Washington Post that this “may have implications for the way we control it.”

Adding: “wearing a mask, washing your hands and all those things are barriers against transmissibility and contagion, but as the virus becomes more contagious, it also becomes more capable of getting around these obstacles.”

The study, which has not yet been peer-reviewed, found that one of the mutations in the new coronavirus it is most dominant in the United States and is responsible for 99.9% of cases in Houston.

According to research, the mutation alters the structure of the “spike” protein and thus may help the strain spread.

The spike proteins help the virus stick to cells. This mutation increases the virus’s ability to infection from those same cells.

Experts from the University of Chicago and the University of Texas Austin say the D614G strain has already outperformed its competitors. And those people infected with this strain have much higher levels of viral load in the airways, which in turn contributes to the new coronavirus spread more easily and effectively.

Even so, and although the strain is more dominant, the researchers point out that this does not mean that it is more lethal. Emphasizing that the severity of the disease is mainly related to the patient’s health history and other previous diseases.
