The mayor of Lisbon, Fernando Medina, met this Thursday with chef Ljubomir Stanisic and José Gouveia, two members of the A Pão e Água movement, a group of several entrepreneurs who are on hunger strike at the door of the Assembly of the Republic for seven days for the Government to listen to its proposals on how to act in the restaurant sector at a time of crisis caused by the new coronavirus.

After the meeting, José Gouveia admitted that, after seven days, he wanted to end the hunger strike, but said that this would have to be a group decision. And it seems that it really came to an end: the group ended the action by sending a message through the WhatsApp network to all colleagues in the sector, to which it had access. “Let’s eat! Thank you for your support!” The message that ended up signed by the A Pão e Água movement reads.

The member of the movement also said that it was agreed that, within seven days, there will be a new meeting between Medina and the group. “The economy cannot stop. We have to find solutions for that. Companies that are closed must have support and cannot wait another day. That is the reality,” said José Gouveia, quoted by Jornal de Notícias.

At the end of the meeting, the mayor assured that there will be no “war” between the restaurant sector and the Government and guaranteed that he has made “a very firm commitment” with the group. “We cannot lose the sense of humanity, the sense of realizing that we are all going through a very difficult stage and that we all have to give our best, seek solutions, not make wars,” Medina said.

It is recalled that the group said that the protest ends only when it is received by the Prime Minister or the Minister of Economy.
