After having announced the ban on fairs and markets held in 121 municipalities, as of Wednesday, the Government now leaves the decision in the hands of the municipalities. The marketers, who accused the measure as “unfair and discriminatory”, say that “justice” has been restored.

The government’s intention to ban fairs and booming markets resulted in strong opposition from merchants and their representatives who threatened protest actions across the country.

However, the JN confirmed, with a government source, that it admits the holding of fairs in the regions considered most at risk, as long as they are authorized by the municipalities and within the respect of the safety regulations and in compliance with the regulations of the DGS.

“It is a decision that we welcome with joy. The Government ends up doing justice in a decision that was not the right one,” said the president of the Association of Fairs and Markets of the North, Fernando Sá.

The mayor of Espinho, Pinto Moreira, the city where the largest weekly fair in the country is held, will authorize the continuation of this open-air market.

“It is a healthy withdrawal of the Government. It was an absolutely unfair discriminatory decision in relation to the fairgrounds of this country and the more than 800 at the Espinho fair,” he said.

The mayor says that he is available to update the contingency plan for the Espinho fair, “in alliance with representatives of market vendors, security forces and the health authority.”

We want access to the fair to be done safely, to reinforce the confidence of consumers and marketers ”, he explained.
