The government backs down and allows fairs and markets to take place. Graça Freitas not authorized – Observer

The government took a step back and decided to authorize the holding of fairs and raised markets. The information was confirmed by the Observer to an official government source less than 48 hours after António Costa announced to the country that the holding of these events was prohibited.

Thus, fairs and markets are authorized for local authorities to give the green light after “having verified the security conditions and compliance with the guidelines defined by the General Directorate of Health.

The measure was being highly contested by the sector and deserved the criticism of Jerónimo de Sousa, general secretary of the PCP, who, after leaving the meeting with Marcelo Rebelo de Sousa, described the measure as erroneous.

This decision comes in counter-cycling with everything that Graça Freitas had said hours before. In the usual press conference, the Director General of Health defended the fairness of the measure, arguing that traditional commerce “is stable, fixed, not mobile” and “gives some guarantee that the rules are being followed.”

“We have to be patient because we really have to flatten the curve because the winter and the cold really and the other viruses have not yet arrived and we have a window of opportunity here and now,” added Graça Freitas.

The Observer requested an official reaction from the Directorate General of Health but, so far, it has not been possible to obtain any clarification for this issue.
