Ongoing studies at Hopital General in Massachusetts in the United States seek to know whether family medical treatment can help save patients infected with the new coronavirus and prevent intubations.

Treatment consists of nitric oxide, a fast-acting gas that dilates the blood vessels in the lungs when inhaled. The treatment is often used in premature babies. In the 1990s, this gas played a key role in the development of Viagra, against erectile dysfunction. The main ingredient in the blue pill, sildenafil, makes the effect of nitric oxide on the body more powerful and increases blood flow.

The gas is made up of a part of nitrogen and a part of oxygen, the two most common gases in the atmosphere. Preliminary data indicates that inhaled nitric oxide can kill the Covid-19 virus, according to a Massachusetts General Hospital statement released by CNBC.

This is because studies during the SARS outbreak in 2004 and 2005 showed that nitric oxide was effective in killing this virus. Now it is necessary to study the effectiveness of the compound against the new coronavirus.

Nitric oxide treatment joins others investigated by doctors and scientists in the fight against Covid-19 worldwide. The United States recently launched the use of the drug Remdesivir in emergencies in patients with covid-19, President Donald Trump said at a White House press conference on Friday.

The drug has shown good results in the recovery of hospitalized patients, speeding up the improvement process. The FDA, the country that regulates drugs in the country, has authorized the use of Remdesivir in emergencies, allowing it to enter the US market without requiring complete data on safety and efficacy.
