Jorge Malheiro, who directed the destinies of the Câmara de Paredes between August 1977 and December 1993, being the mayor of the chamber that was in office the longest, died at the age of 79.

The flag of the municipal buildings will be placed at half mast. Jorge Malheiro was the second to preside over the Autarquía de Paredes after April 25, 1974.
He was the promoter of the CDS-PP in Paredes, becoming the first president of the Municipal Political Commission. He ran for the Municipality of Paredes in 1976, included, as number two, on the list of CDS that won the elections. On August 19, 1977, due to the resignation of Francisco Ribeiro da Mota, he assumed the position of Mayor of the City Council, having remained in office for the next two terms, until the end of 1993.
In his municipal management he was in charge of several works that contributed to the development of the municipality, from the beginning of the project to clean up the town of Paredes, the elevation of Paredes to the City, the remodeling and expansion of the Paços do Concelho building, and the works of enlargement. and improvement of several cemeteries, through the construction of streets throughout the municipality, the infrastructure of various school facilities, and the remodeling of the electricity distribution network in several parishes.
In addition, it was also under his direction that the construction of the WWTP in Paredes, the construction of the O Sonho neighborhood, the installation of a delegation of the Red Cross in Paredes, the implementation of CESPU in Paredes or with the purchase of 18 thousand meters squares for the Parque da Cidade de Paredes.
In 2015, he received the Key of Honor from the Municipality of Paredes. In 2017, due to the various advances it made in favor of the municipality, its name was attributed to a roundabout in the city and the municipal swimming pool, the first to be built in the region.
“I don’t know if I deserve it [a homenagem], but I know that it was in this public space where I gave myself the best that I could and knew. It was an honor to dedicate a life to the cause and public affairs and to have served my land, ”Jorge Malheiro said at the time.
The time of funerals has not yet been defined, but due to current recommendations from the General Directorate of Health, funeral ceremonies will be reserved only for direct family members.
