The fall of a tree kills a man in Barcelos

It is one of the oldest and best known restaurants in Barcelos. With 45 years of history, Furna has had takeout from the beginning. 10 years ago, he began betting on home deliveries, becoming a pioneer in the area of regional food home delivery (until then, in Barcelos, only pizzas were delivered). And this “know-how” served as a cushion to mitigate the impact of the pandemic crisis. Home delivery grew with the pandemic: from 20 parishes it now covered the entire municipality (89 parishes, before the administrative reform, 61 after). From two cars he went to seven. And for these curfew weekends the service was reinforced with two more cars.

“We could not say goodbye, because we never lost more than 40% of what the state predicted, because we grew up in takeout food and at home,” explains O MINHO manager Armando Pinto.

“Furna has been around for 45 years with take out food. We have been domiciled for ten years. Before the pandemic we had two cars, now we have seven and this weekend we have nine, “he says. “It is the only way we have to work.”

Home delivery “has always been on the rise”, but the pandemic has accentuated it. “Maybe we made 100 deliveries a week and we are currently at 500 and many”, argues Pinto, recalling the start with a single motorcycle.

“We started with a motorcycle, two motorcycles, three motorcycles, a car, two cars … Obviously, this pandemic situation made growth more exponential, but the future is still near”, considers the manager of Furna, justifying that “yes people do the calculations do not leave home “.

“The cost does not cover leaving the house, getting in the car, finding parking, waiting in line, going home. The person leaves work, goes home, takes a shower, sits on the sofa and a few minutes later we are playing at the door of his house with food, ”he argues.

The pandemic also led Furna, known for its roast chicken, to cover the entire municipality of Barcelos, from Martim to Tregosa, Pousa and Vila Cova. “We have clients in all the parishes and in this pandemic situation we made an effort to try to reach everyone,” he stresses.

On the other hand, room service had a “75% drop”, which means that, in general, the house continues to “lose” with the pandemic. Armando Pinto sympathizes with the critics of the sector in relation to the new more restrictive measures, but “the truth is that we were already bad without this confinement.”

“We have restaurants open, but we don’t work. On Sunday, I am doing 20% of what I did. How do I keep the room staff working at 20%? How do I fight it? It is with the home. And it’s almost on the counter cycle. I am currently hiring people. Today [sexta-feira] another messenger entered. We are investing, we buy another car. In take-away and home we are in a counter-cycle, we are growing, but in general terms we still have losses ”, says Armando Pinto, considering that the experience in these two areas was crucial.

“We have all the logistics in place. Take-away and home were already 50% of home volume, now it represents much more ”, he concludes.
