In a speech by “Zoom”, this Tuesday, at the Matosinhos Chamber meeting, José Silva, from Galp, reaffirmed that the Matosinhos refinery will even close. “It is an irreversible path, which the pandemic has accentuated.”

“Studies were carried out. These studies did not overcome the limitations. There is no economic justification, nor a strategy for the continuation of refining in Matosinhos,” he said.

Looking ahead, he stated that “any use made of the space”, in Leça de Palmeira, “will be based on an industrial basis”.

For the “401 workers” of the refinery, José Silva said that “each case is different”, but added that the company “will retain 60 employees” and to these is added “internal mobility, requalification and a reform staff.

The “first measure”, announced this Tuesday, will mean the “suspension of the hiring of new workers.”

“The integration of current workers in other group companies is being studied,” he said. “Everyone will be treated with respect,” he guaranteed.

“It is a complex and difficult decision”, justified by “environmental issues, energy transition, consumption patterns, ongoing investments by companies in Asia, fiscal framework and digitization opportunities.”

José Silva spoke of an “irreversible path, which the pandemic has accentuated, in an adverse context, and the demand for fuel will not recover in the coming years.”

“This will be the fifth refinery to declare closure in Europe,” he stressed, saying that “the Matosinhos refinery is at the bottom of Iberia and even Europe.”

The union representatives also spoke at the Matosinhos Chamber meeting, which takes place this afternoon. Luísa Salgueiro, mayor of Matosinhos, as well as all the councilors expressed solidarity with the workers.
