A Capitol police officer died Friday and another was injured after a driver struck them on Capitol Hill.
The suspect, who got out of the car with a knife in his hand and stabbed one of the officers, was later shot and eventually died.
The suspect was not on Capitol Police radar prior to the attack, but it was apparently not a terrorist attack.
The Capitol, as well as adjacent streets in Washington DC, were closed.
In the North American press it is said that there was a shooting to the north of the building and that there were injuries.
Capitol Police told everyone to stay inside the building and away from windows.
A CNN reporter reports seeing ambulances, a helicopter and a person lying on a stretcher outside the Capitol.
The FBI is already helping the Capitol Police.
The president of the United States regrets the attack
US President Joe Biden said he was “devastated” after Friday’s attack on the Capitol in Washington, where a police officer died after being beaten and stabbed.
“Jill and I are devastated to learn of the violent attack on a security checkpoint at the US Capitol.“he said, in a statement, ordering that flags on federal public buildings be placed at half mast.
One police officer was killed and another seriously injured in the attack, which came less than three months after Donald Trump supporters attacked the headquarters of the United States Congress.
“We know how tough times are for the Capitol, for everyone who works there and for those who protect it.”Joe Biden lamented.
The incident comes at a time when Capitol security remains the top priority for many lawmakers, despite the recent reduction of some additional protective measures that were put in place after the January 6 invasion by Donald Trump supporters, in which five people died.
Recently, the barbed wire fence mounted around the Capitol for the past few months has been broken. On the other hand, thousands of National Guard soldiers who have been deployed to strengthen the security of the building have returned home, although some remain in Washington DC.
