British Prime Minister Boris Johnson on Saturday announced new restrictions for the London and South East and East regions of England after discovering a new variant of Covid-19.

Boris Johnson stressed that the measures planned for Christmas could not be maintained and tightened the restrictions for the next holiday seasons.

In accordance with BBC, these areas will go to level 4 restrictions, equivalent to a confinement, starting this Sunday. The population is advised to stay home and teleworking is mandatory whenever possible. Travel to level 4 areas, the highest since the beginning of the pandemic, is not recommended.

Only be allowed to be with one person from another household outdoors. Non-essential stores, gyms and stores are expected to remain closed.

In the case of transmission risk levels 1, 2 and 3, the regulations that allowed up to three families to meet will now be limited to Christmas day and not five days, as initially anticipated.

The British prime minister met with ministers in an emergency on Saturday after scientists warned that evidence shows that a new variant of Covid-19 is more infectious than existing ones.

“The UK has identified a new variant of Covid-19 through Public Health England genomic surveillance,” said England’s chief medical officer Professor Chris Whitty, adding that data on the increase in Covid- 19 in the country showed that “the new strain can spread more quickly.”

Chris Whitty says there is no evidence “that the new variant causes a higher death rate or affects vaccines and treatments, although work is urgently underway to confirm this.”

The country warned the World Health Organization about new evidence from scientists.
