The Beja Polytechnic Institute suspends classes for two weeks

The Beja Polytechnic Institute (IPBeja) announced this Saturday that it will suspend all face-to-face classes, replacing them with “online” teaching activities, which led to the closure of the four schools.

In question, according to the Presidency of the institution “there is an active covid-19 outbreak in IPBeja with 13 positive cases.” As a preventive measure “during the next two weeks, from October 26 to November 6, distance education relies on digital technologies,” he justifies.

The Polytechnic has also taken into account that “the municipality of Beja is identified with a high level of contagion risk” together with the current situation of the evolution of the pandemic in Portugal.

According to a statement from the institution, “the period of two weeks may be renewed, according to the evolution of epidemiology” to control the identified outbreak, with the guarantee “of the safety and health of the entire academic community,” they justify.

“Monitoring, social support and actions with infected students and students in isolation will be carried out by the Social Action Services, in close collaboration with the health authorities,” says the IPBeja Presidency.

Last Tuesday, the Polytechnic announced that on the weekend of October 17 and 18 “three cases of covid-19 were confirmed” in the institution, after two students tested positive in September, bringing the total to five .

When on October 20 the Institute announced the existence of the three positive cases, it was mentioned that as preventive measures, the respective classes immediately switched to distance education and the internal communities of each School were informed by the respective Directorate.

At that time, JN questioned the Polytechnic if the cases had been detected in some of the residences and if the affected students were from PALOP, they only told us that: “among the five cases identified there are national students and international students.”

Two outbreaks in homes

ULSBA states that, in addition to the three deaths in Mansão de São José, there are a total of 104 active cases, 84 among users and 20 employees. The patients admitted to the Hospital de Beja are 10 users, eight in the infirmary and two in the Polyvalent Intensive Care Unit (PICU), with three users already deceased.

In the Hogar de la Parroquia y Centro Social de Salvador, there are 32 positive cases, 25 of which were in patients, two of which were hospitalized in the covid-19 ward of the hospital and 7 among employees.
