The acquisitions for the 2020/2021 season are really reinforcements for Rúben Amorim. And we are not just talking about Pedro Gonçalves and Nuno Santos, whose performances are fundamental for the leadership of Sporting on Matchday 7. We also refer to Adán, Pedro Porro, Feddal and João Mário, who went straight to eleven -Antunes knew that it was an option for Nuno Mendes and Tabata is recovering from an injury to show his worth- and with a very good note positive. Compared to last season, León’s success in the market is, at this point, like overnight.
€ 20.5 M were invested in the summer of 2019, plus € 6 M in winter (Sporar) for a total of € 26.5 M invested in the market in 2019/2020. Nine players signed, only three with a performance worthy of transition to the new season: Neto, Vietto (meanwhile transferred to Al-Hilal, from Saudi Arabia, for € 7m) and Sporar, the first and last starting now.
Along the way Jesé and Bolasie were lost, who did not convince and returned to the clubs that had yielded them, PSG and Everton, in April, when the pandemic interrupted the competition – Fernando had already returned to Shakhtar in January, without any lion chest. Nor did they justify the investment of Rosier (now on loan to Besiktas), Eduardo (on loan to Crotone) and Camacho (team B).
Very different the new season, still no winter market. Eight signings (two on loan, Pedro Porro and João Mário) for only 12.9 million euros, six to take place immediately in the eleven, the aforementioned António Adán, Pedro Porro, Zouhair Feddal, João Mário, Pedro Gonçalves and Nuno Santos. In addition to fundamental movements in the League, the reinforcements have already contributed this season and, just after seven days, with eleven goals and many other assists, against the 12 goals and nine passes recorded by the 2019/2020 acquisitions throughout seasonal – with emphasis on Sporar and Vietto.
Youth and returns
It is also worth highlighting the new faces of the team, already under the responsibility of Rúben Amorim, in addition to the hiring: promotions for the young people of the training in 2019/2020 – Eduardo Quaresma, Gonçalo Inácio, Nuno Mendes, Matheus Nunes and Tiago Tomás – and loan repayments (2020/2021) that have proven to be of high quality: Palhinha and Daniel Bragança.
