THE BALL – “Lack of understanding of the game, it’s the coach’s fault” (Sporting)

Rúben Amorim explained the main difficulties that Sporting encountered in Jamor, where they achieved a long-suffering victory (2-1) over Belenenses SAD.

“The Belenenses adapted better to the pitch, while we had some difficulties. I think Petit was better there than I was in preparing for the game. We wanted to build from behind where the terrain was worse, Belenenses adapted better, threw the ball in front and, from there, played. It was also what we should have done. We prepared the game on a different field, which is no excuse because the two teams played on the same field. There was a clear better adaptation of the Belenenses in certain situations of the game, which makes it very difficult when we do not build from behind. We should have done it the other way around, ”he said at a press conference, taking responsibility for the team’s less successful display:

– It has to do with understanding the game. When all (the players) are fine, strong, but (without) understanding of the game, then the fault lies with the coach. The players gave everything, what was missing was the coach to better prepare the game under these conditions. It is not easy to win any game, but this team is very difficult to beat. While in the first half we shared the game a lot, in the second we didn’t give Belenenses much space to play.
