Jorge Silas gave an interview to ESPN Brazil where he talks about the influence of José Mourinho and Jorge Jesus in his career as a player. And how learning with both encouraged him to pursue a coaching career after hanging up his boots.
In the 2001/2002 season, the former midfielder coincided with Mourinho at UD Leiria, then giving the young manager his first steps as a manager after his debut at Benfica.
“I could already see that it was different from anything I had seen. The human relationship with the player and the tactical part of him are very strong. He and Jesus are very similar. I had never played in the Portuguese First Division and Mourinho knew me from Spain because I was an assistant at Barcelona, ”recalls Silas, referring to his spells at AD Ceuta and Elche.
Between 2006 and 2008, Silas was trained by Jorge Jesus in Belenenses.
«I remember that when Jesus arrived, I called Renato, a friend of mine who had been trained by him, to ask him for information. He replied: ‘The tactical level is as good or better than Mourinho’s. I said, ‘You’re crazy, I don’t think so.’ The truth is that the first week I remembered what he had told me. In truth, the missile told me things that I had never heard before, I had never seen a trainer correct me so much. When I worked with him, I realized that I would like to be a coach when he stops playing. It inspired me and many others, like Abel Ferreira [agora no Palmeiras]. He was a very technical player, but he saw the game in a very individual way. I started to enjoy football also on a collective level ”, Silas explains to ESPN Brazil, pointing out the frontal relationship with the players as one of the great strengths of the current Benfica manager.
“With him, the players had to realize that the scolding was not against the person, but to help. Some players thought it was personal or that he was hinting, but no. Some can’t stand it because the pressure is high and it requires maximum concentration at all times during training. He is very direct in his way of speaking and the strongest on a psychological level evolve a lot with him, “he stressed.
«What I like the most about him, and that I have also adopted in my career, is that he is one of the coaches I talked to the most about football. Sometimes he would tell me to do something and I would tell him to do something different. If I could show that my idea was better, I would deliver. He was not a dictator. Often he would come the next day and say that he had thought about what I had said and experienced it. And I was not less a coach for that, on the contrary, “said Silas.
