He left the technical command of Flamengo in May 2019 and saw Jorge Jesús take his place and lead the club to the conquest of Brasileirão and Libertadores. Amid praise for the Portuguese’s work, Abel Braga ended up revealing that he declined an invitation to have lunch with the coach who, meanwhile, was returning to Benfica.

«Jorge Jesús did a fantastic job, there is no point in denying it. It wasn’t great how it turned out, it didn’t have to come out like this. And I think when you came in, you could pick up the phone and call me. Later he tried to have lunch with me. He never invited me to Portugal, where I was six and a half years, he said: ‘I’m not going.’ He’s going through a difficult time now with Benfica, who signed a lot. But he’s a great coach, don’t doubt it, ”he said during an interview with Alê Oliveira’s YouTube channel.

Abel Braga also defended that he left a team made for Jorge Jesús to work when he joined Flamengo: «I had an armed team, that’s the truth. When Cuellar left, that’s when I left. Then came Rafinha, Mari, Filipe Luis and Gerson. The most criticized was Aaron, he backed off a bit. Gerson was a midfielder and shines as a second striker, it is to Jesus’ credit. Nobody can talk about work, but things don’t always work out. They think I’m out of date due to my age. They talk a lot of nonsense.

The 68-year-old Brazilian coach, who trained Rio Ave, Famalicão, Belenenses and Vitória de Setúbal in Portugal, also made an analysis of Jorge Jesus’ career, considering his time at Flamengo as the best stage of the Portuguese career.

His concept is not bad. He did a very good job at Benfica. But the Champions League, which is the Libertadores here, did not win. At Sporting things did not go so well. I don’t think there is a moment as good as in Flamengo, it was exceptional ”, he assumed.
