The Government of the Azores announced today the extension until October 1 of the situation of public calamity, due to the covid-19 pandemic, in the five islands of the region with air connection abroad.

The extension of the declaration of the situation of public calamity, says the executive in a note sent to the press, affects the islands of Santa María, São Miguel, Terceira, Pico and Faial and will last until 24:00 on 1 October.

The islands of Graciosa, São Jorge, Flores and Corvo, without direct air connections with the Portuguese mainland, will remain on alert until the same date.

The regional executive recalls that as of Monday there were 46 active positive cases on the islands of São Miguel, Terceira, Pico and Graciosa.

Furthermore, in view of the evolution of the global pandemic situation, and taking into account the air connections from abroad to the islands of Santa María, São Miguel, Terceira, Pico and Faial, the extension of the declaration of situation. of public calamity on these islands, as well as the extension of the alert situation on the islands of Graciosa, São Jorge, Flores and Corvo ”, it is also said.

It was also determined that, after the reopening of the national maritime space to cruise ships and yachts from international ports, “the normalization of the mooring of these vessels in the ports and marinas of the archipelago should be promoted, and provided that the respective passengers are tested at their disposal. arrival, unless the Regional Health Authority rejects it, taking into account the non-stop travel time and the absence of symptoms.

The covid-19 pandemic has already claimed at least 924,968 deaths and more than 29 million cases of infection in 196 countries and territories, according to a report by the French agency AFP.

In Portugal, 1,871 people died from 64,596 confirmed cases of infection, according to the most recent bulletin from the Directorate General of Health.
