Even before cleaning up the hundreds of debris scattered along the A1, GNR had already prepared the formal request to Brisa. – the procedure involved a request from the Public Ministry of Santarém, which supervises the investigation – to access the video surveillance images of the section of the A1 highway where the brutal accident that took the life of Sara Carreira took place.
As it is an accident with a fatal victim and the crime of negligent homicide may exist, the authorities want to know the exact moments of the three clashes that occurred as well as estimate the speeds of the vehicles involved. And images are essential to help in this process.
The ongoing investigation will also take into account the testimonies of Ivo Lucas (admitted to the Santa María hospital), who was going to drive the Land Rover where Sara Carreira died, of the fado singer Cristina Branco – the first victim of an accident – and of another motorist who in the same managed to cross the wreckage without hitting anyone.
HOW IT ALL HAPPENED
The series of crashes occurred between 6:35 pm and 6:45 pm, at a time when it was raining heavily and visibility was reduced. The INEM received several calls from witnesses to the tragedy.
Fado singer Cristina Branco was driving a Volvo van that would have been lost, immobilized in the center of the A1, without lights. The singer and her ten-year-old daughter fled to the central tab. Some time later the car of Ivo Lucas appears, who, surprised by the obstacle on the road, tried to avoid the collision, but when he dodged he hit the steering wheel of the artist’s car with a wheel, rolling several tens of meters.
When the jeep stopped, another car, allegedly a Fiat Palio, collided with violence precisely on the “hanging” side of the Range Rover, where Sara Carreira was traveling. This vehicle even had a fire.
Another vehicle ended up hitting the back of Cristina Branco’s Volvo.
The Santarém GNR Road Accident Investigation Nucleus team is made up of a sergeant and four guards and now has the arduous task of putting together all these pieces of the puzzle to explain how this tragedy really happened.
