The thermometers go up this Wednesday, but there are reasons to warn. The Portuguese Institute of the Sea and the Atmosphere (IPMA) warns of the continuation of high temperatures and the consequent worsening of the risk of fire, at a time when some regions of Portugal are under an air mass from the deserts of the North Africa, which, according to the Directorate General of Health (DGS), could cause “a situation of poor air quality on the continent”.

The IPMA foresees the continuation of the “hot and generally dry” climate until March 31, with temperatures “above normal” for the time of year, low relative humidity values and a gradual intensification of the wind, with an impact on the aggravation of the risk of fire.

The maximum temperature will vary between 22 and 30 ° C in much of the territory, “forecasting the highest values in the Central and South regions, especially on the West coast, in the interior of the Alentejo and in some places of the Tagus Valley and from the Douro Valley. On day 1 a sharp drop in the maximum temperature is expected to below 23 ° C ”, says the IPMA, in a statement.

In addition, the flow from the east, which will progressively turn south, induces a transport of dust to the mainland until the 31st ”.

The rise in temperatures comes at a time when Portugal is under an air mass originating from the deserts of North Africa, with the DGS issuing a warning to children, the elderly and patients with chronic respiratory problems, especially asthma and cardiovascular patients, so that they remain “inside the buildings and, if possible, with the windows closed”.

“This pollutant has effects on human health, especially in the most sensitive population, that is, children and the elderly, whose healthcare needs to be redoubled during the occurrence of these situations”, highlights the DGS.

“In the coming days, there are still unstable conditions with the possibility of scattered showers that may be accompanied by thunderstorms in some places. In addition, the east flow, which will progressively turn south, induces a transport of dust to the mainland until the 31st, ”adds IPMA.
