Teleworking will continue to be mandatory in May – employment

The Government will maintain “mandatory” teleworking in May, as announced by the Minister of State and Economy, Siza Vieira, this Thursday in Parliament.

“We will maintain mandatory teleworking throughout May. In June, if conditions permit, we will gradually lift mandatory teleworking so that we can relearn how to drive with limitations,” the minister said.

The current regime allows workers to impose telework against the will of companies, and vice versa, provided that the functions are compatible with remote work.

According to the document already distributed by the Government, on May 4 “professional practice continues in a telework regime, as long as the functions allow it.”

For June, “partial teleworking, with delayed hours or mirror equipment” is planned.

Meanwhile, the Prime Minister confirmed the intention, explaining that the objective is to keep companies working while avoiding, however, a high concentration of people in the same place.

The promotion of telework was encouraged, for example, by UGT. This Wednesday, after a social consultation meeting, the UGT Undersecretary, Paula Bernardo, explained to Business that the Prime Minister was in favor of extending the telework regime.

João Vieira Lopes, from CCP, and António Saraiva, from CIP, also explained to Business that the Executive’s concern is also to alleviate the number of passengers on public transport, in this phase of progressive recovery.

However, this Wednesday there were doubts about the government’s political decision.

Under normal teleworking (without dismissal), workers retain the right to all remuneration, including lunch allowance, as the Government has already explained.
