Telecommunications prices in Portugal increased by 6.5%

Telecommunications are today a set of essential services for any family or business. Despite the good offers in terms of service, at the price level, in Portugal, this is not the case.

According to EUROSTAT data, between the end of 2009 and October 2020, telecommunications prices in Portugal increased by 6.5%, while in the European Union they fell by 11%.

Unlike what is happening in the countries of the European Union, in Portugal the price of telecommunications increased by 6.5%. The growth is significant, taking into account that in the European Union the value of telecommunications decreased by around 11%.

The differences between the evolution of telecommunications prices in Portugal and in the EU are mainly due to the “price adjustments” that providers have implemented for several years, generally in the first months of each year.

According to ANACOM, Portugal continues to register high retail prices for electronic communications service offerings compared to other countries in the European Union.

Several independent international organizations have conducted international telecommunications price comparisons for the residential segment over the years. The results of the most recent price comparisons promoted by the European Commission are shown in the following graphs (ATTENTION: the lower the value of the index, the higher the prices):

On the other hand, according to the report on the "Evolution of telecommunications prices", of October 2020, released today by ANACOM, among the services / offers considered, the lowest monthly rates are offered by NOWO in seven cases of services / offers, while MEO, NOS and Vodafone presented the lowest monthly rates for two types of services / offers.

It should be noted that NOWO's individualized Internet access offer has the lowest monthly rate (20 euros). The monthly fee for the offer in question is at least 20% cheaper than that of the other providers.

Compared with the same month of the previous year, the following price variations stand out (Table 1):
