The training levels of all sports can progressively return to compete until May 3, depending on the “epidemiological evolution” of the covid-19 pandemic, the Secretary of State for Sports, João Paulo Rebelo, said on Tuesday.

In conversation with the president of the Portuguese Sports Confederation, Carlos Paula Cardoso, the minister explained that the tests may be resumed on the days when the practice of the modalities is allowed again, depending on the degree of risk: those of low risk, all individual, as of April 5, medium risk on April 19 and high risk on May 3, according to the de-definition plan announced on March 11.

“It is clear that we have competences. In individual modalities, we have competences since April 5, the federations have conditions for that. As of May 3, we have all competences. This depends on the epidemiological evolution, the number of cases , spread of the virus “, he said, in a videoconference conversation broadcast on the social network Facebook.

Despite the return of training in the training of medium risk sports, such as soccer, futsal, handball, basketball, volleyball and roller hockey, scheduled for April 19, João Paulo Rebelo assumed that the respective events can only return on April 3. May, to avoid an “abrupt opening”.

“We are evaluating whether it is appropriate to start the competitions soon on April 19. I don’t think it’s appropriate right now, because athletes won’t be able to compete anytime soon. And we also have the question of mobility between territories. , in the first 15 days, there are no interregional competitions in the country ”, he explained.

Asked by Carlos Paula Cardoso about the need to change the orientation that regulates sports practice in the country, published by the General Directorate of Health (DGS) on August 25, the Secretary of State for Youth and Sports said that his office is in Contact. with the Ministry of Health so that “the new orientation comes out as soon as possible.”

João Paulo Rebelo recalled, however, that the current guideline provides for a resumption of training levels “three or four weeks after” the start of the 2020/21 school year, something that did not happen due to the increase in the number of infections. cases until September and the subsequent general confinement between January and March.

Despite acknowledging that the interruption of training in collective modalities has been a “tragedy”, the government official was convinced that the number of athletes in Portugal will not only recover in the post-pandemic, but will even be exceeded, due to the support promised to the sector of 65 million euros and also to the application of funds from the next community framework, Portugal 2030, in sport.

“The next EU funding framework will, in all fairness, consider sport, something that Portugal 2020 did not consider. The Government has a goal that, by 2030, Portugal will be among the 15 most active nations in Europe. And we will take advantage of PT 2030 for this, ”he said.

Regarding the return of the public to sporting events and the impossibility of this happening at the Portuguese Motorcycle Grand Prix, scheduled for April 18, and at the Formula 1 Grand Prix, on May 2, both in Portimão , according to the news published by Expressed. On Friday, the secretary of state said he “had no knowledge of the source of the news” and said he wanted the public to attend the events “as soon as possible.”

“The Secretary of State made it possible for the health authorities to reach the public who wanted to have an audience as soon as possible at sporting events. We trust that sporting organizations will be able to organize events in complete safety. The final decision corresponds to the health authorities “, He said.
