Spain, the UK, Germany and the Netherlands want Portuguese nurses. The pandemic and the need to reinforce care in hospitals and homes are intensifying requests for hiring, guarantees the Order of Nurses. More than 4,000 professionals emigrated in 2019.

The Ordem dos diseases worries about the departure of health professionals from Portugal abroad and asks the Government to create “fixing mechanisms”. The second wave of the pandemic in Europe is intensifying the requests for hiring Portuguese nurses, that is, to work in hospitals and homes.

“The Order of Nurses faces daily, with special insistence in the last two weeks, requests for the recruitment of Portuguese nurses from various European countries that are offering annual contracts, free transport and accommodation. Only from Spain have five contacts been made in recent days, from Galicia to the Canary Islands, with offers of 30 thousand euros gross per year. The Netherlands, in addition to offering the best remuneration conditions, offers accommodation, transportation and a Dutch language course, warns the Order of Nurses, recalling that As happened in the first wave of the pandemic, the demand for health professionals is intensifying now.

Portugal, President Ana Rita Cavaco believes, has done little to fix the nurses in the National Health Service. In addition to the supply of precarious contracts for four months, there are no incentives, risk or pain subsidies and better remuneration conditions. “We cannot continue to buy ventilators and export nurses,” says the president in a statement, convinced that it is essential to review the way of hiring and working conditions of nurses, as well as to create mechanisms for the return of those who emigrated.

In fact, 2019 was the record year of emigration for nurses in this decade. “More than four thousand requested the declaration for reasons of emigration, a record figure that tripled compared to 2017 and represents an increase of 64% compared to 2018, and, at this moment, there are almost 20 thousand nurses abroad.”

The Order of Nurses issued 4506 emigration declarations in 2019. Among the main destinations are England, Spain and Switzerland. An exponential increase compared to previous years that has not occurred since 2011. From 2010 to 2011, the issuance of emigration declarations went from 179 to 1775. In the following four years, the number of nurses to emigrate remained stable, always by over 2500 statements issued by the Order. In 2016 and 2017, there was a reduction of more than a thousand orders. The request for declarations was reduced to 1614 and 1286 respectively. In 2018 it grew again (2,736), returning to the values reached between 2012 and 2015.

Regarding the declarations issued this year (2020 is an atypical year as a consequence of the covid-19 pandemic), the Ordem dos Diseiros has not yet completed its accounting.
