José Sócrates criticized, in an article published in the Brazilian magazine Carta Capital, the reactions of the Prime Minister and the President of the Republic to the death of the Ukrainian Ihor Homenyuk at the facilities of the Foreigners and Borders Service (SEF), at the airport of Lisbon.

Socrates recalls that Ihor Homeniuk landed at Lisbon airport on March 10, and that the SEF took him to a room where, “after several adventures, they tied him up, beat him and he would die.”

During that period of some fifty-seven hours in which he was detained in Portuguese territory, he did not have access to a translator or a lawyer, nor was he present before a judge as required by the Constitution of the Republic. In the following hours the death certificate was falsified, death was taken for granted and the murder was covered up, “it reads.

The former prime minister says that “the dark issue was kept at a cost in the public space by some journalists of the written press – the rest, the television industry that dominates the political agenda and, in practice, decides what exists and what does not exist”. , did not see in the case cause for indignation, with the virtuous exception of one of them who broke the news ”.

It is then that Socrates criticizes António Costa and Marcelo Rebelo de Sousa. The Prime Minister and the President of the Republic, despite the fact that the latter appears every day on television, without knowing whether to distribute affections to the people or ask for them, did not feel the need to refer to the dishonorable matter, in addition to brief circumstantial considerations at the time the crime was revealed, ”he criticizes, stressing that it is“ sad to see a socialist government accused of devaluing a serious case of police violence in which a foreign citizen ends up being murdered ”.

“More than the culture of any police institution, what is at stake is a problem of political culture,” he considers.

The former PS leader also points out that what happened at the Lisbon airport “is not, nor is it only, a disgrace, a tragic and isolated incident, it is a clear sign of an obscene change in European political culture and that has repercussions.” internal police cultures “.

But Socrates does not stop here and also criticizes the statements of the national director of the PSP, Magina da Silva, after being received by Marcelo Rebelo de Sousa, last Sunday.

“What impressed me most about his studied and well-prepared statement was the previous point in which he stated that the Immigration and Border Service is a good police force and has excellent professionals. Not a word to condemn the murder, not a word for condolences. to the family, not a word to regret the damage that the case does to the State. I get the impression that the police chief’s statement was made for the sole purpose of affirming a certain culture of police authority, ”he concludes.
