Since May 19, Portugal has not had as many people hospitalized in Intensive Care Units (ICU) due to the Covid-19 pandemic. This Tuesday 99 cases of hospitalization were registered in the ICU – on May 19 there were 101 people in the ICU.

According to the figures provided in the epidemiological situation bulletin of the General Health Directorate (DGS), there were more six deaths and 688 new cases in the last 24 hours. There were two more deaths and 263 new cases than this Monday, the day when 425 new cases and four deaths were registered.

Of these new infections, 478 occurred in the Lisbon and Vale do Tejo region, that is, 69.5% of all new cases. It’s been four days since this region had such a high number of new infections: On September 25, Lisbon and Vale do Tejo registered 505 new cases.

Portugal has 74,717 confirmed cases of infection and 1,963 deaths since the beginning of the pandemic.

Even with regard to hospitalizations, the DGS bulletin indicates that There are 661 people hospitalized for Covid-19 in Portugal., two more cases than this Monday. In the past 24 hours, there were 309 more recovery cases, 72 more cases than yesterday, with 48,193 people recovering from Covid-19 since the start of the pandemic. There are 60 additional surveillance contacts in the last 24 hours.

Regarding active cases -which correspond to the number of confirmed cases, minus those recovered and deceased-, in the last 24 hours 373 new cases were registered. There are currently 24,561 people infected with the new coronavirus in Portugal, at the same time. According to Worldometers, since the beginning of the pandemic, not as many infected people have been registered. The day with the most active cases was May 15: that day there were 24,065 active cases, there were six deaths and 264 new cases and 673 people were hospitalized, of which 112 were in the ICU.

In addition to 478 new cases in the Lisbon and Vale do Tejo region in the last 24 hours, in the north there were 160 more cases, in the central region another 16 cases and in the Algarve 22. Madeira and Alentejo counted five more infections and the Azores plus two.

Of the six deaths, five were registered in the Lisbon and Vale do Tejo region and one in the Center. The fatal victims are a man and four women over 80 years old and a man between 70 and 79 years old.
