Electricity failed throughout the island of Madeira due to bad weather. A heavy rain has been hitting the archipelago since early morning.

There has been no power on the island for at least an hour and several floods have already been recorded. The rain has also entered garages and commercial establishments.

According to the Jornal da Madeira, some places are completely flooded and isolated. The police are blocking road traffic on the better roads.

Bad weather has already left seven people homeless: six are at the Pousada da Juventude do Funchal and one of them is with relatives. Light is already being restored in some areas of the island. The hospital and the fire department run on generators.

Madeira under red notice until 9:00 p.m. on Sunday

The Instituto do Mar e de Atmosfera raised the alert for the south coast and the mountainous regions of Madeira to red due to rain, hail and thunder. The red warning will be in effect until 9:00 p.m. on Sunday.

Precipitation levels have already reached the orange warning in some areas. In Funchal, thunderstorms are constant. The trend is for the climatic conditions to worsen, and the peak of rain is expected to occur at night.
