An unidentified illness led to the hospitalization of 300 people in southeastern India, according to local authorities investigating the cases.

A CNN says that patients in the city of Eluru, in Andhra Pradesh state, had symptoms such as seizures, loss of consciousness and some nausea over the weekend.

Although Andhra Pradesh is one of the states hardest hit by the pandemic in India, with more than 800,000 confirmed cases, none of the 300 people tested positive for the disease.

“All the patients had negative results for COVID-19,” said Dolla Joshi Roy, chief health officer responsible.

Roy added that of the 300 people, about 180 have already been discharged and the rest are “stable.” There is evidence of a death, however the causes are not related to the symptoms, confirmed the health delegate.

In a statement issued, the Andhra Pradesh Health Department reveals that the first blood tests found no evidence of viral infection, such as dengue or chikungunya, both caused by mosquito bites.

Health officials are now conducting water tests in Eluru, as all affected people received water from a common source.

Experts from the Indian Institute of Medical Sciences and a neurologist from another state also came to town for more neurotoxic tests.

The health delegate says that although the “cause is still unknown”, the authorities are doing “all kinds of tests, including food and milk tests” to find out the origin of this unidentified disease.
