The Spanish Government has decreed a state of emergency in the Community of Madrid.

The decision, taken by the extraordinary Council of Ministers, will take effect in the next 15 days, the maximum allowed by the Constitution. The Spanish Government will thus be able to limit the movement of citizens through the region in the next two weeks.

The declaration of the state of emergency occurs one day after the The Superior Court of Justice of Madrid rejected the measures imposed by the central government in 10 municipalities of the Community of Madrid, including the capital of the country, since last Saturday, to fight against the increase in cases of covid-19.

The decision, which will have immediate effect, is of absolute urgency, according to the Government. This Friday begins a long weekend and the executive wants to prevent thousands of Madrid residents from moving to other parts of the country.

The City Council was scheduled for 8:30 am, but the executive decided to postpone it until 12:00, so that Madrid would have time to prepare a response.

The Spanish government waited all Friday morning for a call from the president of Madrid, Isabel Díaz Ayuso.

When the call came, Pedro Sánchez informed Ayuso that the City Council had already decided. Sánchez explained, according to the The country, that the health of the Madrid population must be protected and that the Government cannot wait any longer to declare a state of emergency.

The two, Pedro Sánchez and Isabel Díaz Ayuso, agreed within 15 days to meet with the governments on possible scenarios for Madrid.

The journalist Belén Rodrigo is in Madrid and explains the implications that the declaration of the state of emergency may have.

The leader of the far-right Spanish populist party Vox, Santiago Abascal, had announced on Thursday night that he would call “a new march for freedom” if the government decrees a state of emergency in Madrid.

Santiago Abascal reacted through social networks, warning that “if the tyrant Sánchez decrees an illegal state of emergency,” he called for a new march for freedom on Monday, October 12.
