The French Government declared this Wednesday a state of health emergency, with a curfew between 9:00 p.m. and 6:00 a.m.

The curfew was announced by President Emmanuel Macron and will apply to nine French regions from Saturday and could last up to six weeks.

Macron considered tonight, in a direct interview with French television, that the curfew is “relevant”, but that a new confinement would be “disproportionate”.

The curfew will be introduced from 21:00 to 06:00 in the île de France (Paris region), Lille, Rouen, Saint-Etienne, Toulouse, Lyon, Grenoble, Aix-en-Provence and Montpellier.

Pressure on hospitals is also being felt in the country, where the number of hospitalized patients reached a new high this Wednesday: more than 9,100 people are being treated in hospitals, the highest number since June.

Experts fear that the healthcare system will collapse at a time when the number of infected people continues to rise.

The state of health emergency was in force in France between March 23 and July 9, having remained in force in some overseas regions until September.

This status allows mayors, who coordinate the security forces in different regions, to institute additional measures in relation to what is decided at the national level. This new phase of the state of health emergency will take effect from Friday at midnight.
