Turkish soccer player Cevher Toktas, 32, confessed to authorities that he suffocated his five-year-old son to death in a hospital bed. The man is said to have told police that he “did not love” his son.
The boy was admitted to the hospital on April 23 with fever and respiratory difficulties. Fearing that he might be infected with the new coronavirus, doctors decided to quarantine the boy with his father.
The same day, and after a warning from the father, the boy was transported to the Intensive Care Unit of the pediatric hospital, where he died two hours later. Breathing difficulties are a typical symptom in patients with Covid-19, authorities determined that death had occurred due to natural causes.
The confession
Eleven days later, Cevher Toktas confessed to authorities that he was responsible for the death of his five-year-old son. According to the SunHe said he had suffocated the boy with a pillow for 15 minutes while they were alone in the room.
“I pressed a pillow against my son, who was lying on his back. For 15 minutes I pressed the pillow without lifting it. My son fought all this time. After I stopped moving, I raised my pillow and asked for help to deflect any suspicions about me, ”the British newspaper quotes.
Cevher Toktas also said that he killed his son because “he did not love him” and that he had never loved him, which is the “only reason” for having committed the crime, adding that he does not suffer from “mental health problems”.
Turkish authorities have already ordered the exhumation of the boy’s body for an autopsy. The 32-year-old man faces possible life in prison.
