A second “untouchable” woman died in India after being raped by two men, police said Thursday, following the death of a first young woman from the same social group Tuesday, outraging the country.
This second case concerns a 22-year-old woman who was raped by two men on Tuesday and died on her way to hospital in Uttar Pradesh state, local police said.
The Dalits, formerly known as “untouchables”, are on the fringes of India’s rigid caste system and are often a highly disadvantaged community.
According to the police, the two suspects were arrested and charged with gang rape and murder.
The authorities indicated that an investigation is still ongoing and that the suspects could be tried in an expedited procedure by a special court.

The roughly 200 million Dalit Indians have long suffered assault and discrimination. The attacks increased during the pandemic caused by the new coronavirus, according to his supporters.
In 2019, an average of 87 rapes were recorded daily in India and crimes against women increased by more than 7% per year, according to official data released on Tuesday.
