The General Directorate of Health (DGS) announced on Wednesday the existence of a total of 1,971 deaths and 75,542 cases of covid-19 in Portugal since the start of the pandemic.

The death toll rose from 1,963 to 1,971, eight more than on Tuesday.

The number of infected increased from 74,717 to 75,542, 825 more than on Tuesday.

In the last 24 hours, 337 people recovered from the disease and the total recovered since the start of the pandemic was 48,530.

As for the number of people hospitalized, there are 5 more as of Tuesday, with a total of 666. There are 6 more people hospitalized in intensive care, totaling 105.

The bulletin also notes that health authorities have 44,758 contacts under surveillance, 527 more than on Tuesday.

DATA BY REGION

In the Lisbon region and the Tagus Valley, 398 new cases of infection were reported, representing 38,692 cases and 765 deaths in the region.

The northern region registers 294 new cases of covid-19, totaling 27,029 and 886 deaths since the start of the pandemic.

In the Central region, there were 82 more cases, representing a total of 6,158 infections and 263 deaths.

In Alentejo, three more cases of covid-19 were registered, totaling 1,502 cases, maintaining the 23 deaths previously recorded.

The Algarve region has reported 41 more cases of infection, totaling 1,663 cases and keeping the 19 dead.

In the Autonomous Region of the Azores, five more new cases were registered in the last 24 hours, adding 274 detected infections and 15 deaths since the start of the pandemic.

Madeira recorded two cases in the last 24 hours, representing 224 infections, with no deaths to date.

AGE AND GENDER

Confirmed cases are distributed in all age groups, with the highest number of infections between 20 and 59 years, with emphasis on the age group between 40 and 49 years.

The new coronavirus has already infected at least 34,278 men and 41,264 women in Portugal, according to reported cases.

Of the total deaths, 988 were men and 983 women.

The highest number of deaths is still concentrated in people over 80 years of age.

There are 302 active outbreaks of Covid-19, mainly in the north of the country.

Portugal has 302 active outbreaks in the country, the majority in the North, all of them characterized by the health authorities, according to data revealed this Wednesday in parliament by the Director General of Health.

Graça Freitas, who intervened in the Parliamentary Health Commission, in a joint hearing with the Labor and Social Security Commission, explained that of the 302 active outbreaks identified as of Tuesday, 123 are in the North, 33 in the Center, 106 in Lisbon and Valle del Tajo, 17 in Alentejo and 23 in Algarve.

“They are all typified. We know where they are and how it happened, whether at a wedding party, in a restaurant or in a pilgrimage, and also who are the close contacts,” said Graça Freitas, explaining that only after 28 days without new cases is that the authorities consider the outbreaks resolved.

The official, who was heard in the context of a request from the CDS-PP about the different outbreaks that, since the beginning of the pandemic, have been registered in homes, whose most serious case occurred in a structure in Reguengos de Monsaraz, said that the available data indicate 51 active outbreaks in homes throughout the country.

Of these 51 outbreaks, 10 are located in the north of the country, two in the Central Region, 35 in Lisbon and the Tagus Valley, three in the Alentejo and three in the Algarve.

Portugal enters a new period of contingency

The contingency situation in force in mainland Portugal since September 15 extends this Tuesday until 11:59 p.m. on October 14, due to the increase in COVID-19 cases registered in recent weeks.

The resolution declaring the contingency situation came into effect at 00:00 on September 15 and was in effect until 11:50 p.m.

On September 24, the Council of Ministers decided to extend until October 14, with the establishment of norms for the individual and collective protection of citizens.

Among the measures applied:

  • concentration limitation to 10 people, unless they belong to the same address, on public roads and in establishments and the prohibition of the sale of alcoholic beverages in service areas or service stations.
  • prohibition of the sale of alcoholic beverages, from 20:00, in retail establishments, including supermarkets and hypermarkets and the prohibition of the consumption of alcoholic beverages in outdoor spaces of restaurants and beverage establishments after 20:00, except in the context of food service.

By virtue of this resolution, as a general rule, it is attributed to the the mayor of the municipality with territorial jurisdiction has the power to set opening hours establishments in the respective geographic area, although within certain limits – from 8:00 p.m. to 11:00 p.m. – and subject to the favorable opinion of the local health authority and security forces.

  • In restaurants, cafes and patisseries 300 m from schools, the maximum limit of four people per group, unless they belong to the same household and in restaurant areas of shopping centers, there is the same maximum limit of four people per group.

The Government also determined the creation of district rapid intervention teams to contain and stabilize covid-19 outbreaks in homes and the establishment of specific rules for the organization of work in the metropolitan areas of Lisbon and Porto, determining the obligation to adopt measures to prevent and mitigate the risks derived from the pandemic, such as the worker rotation scales between the teleworking regime and work performed in the usual workplace, and the time difference.
