Cases of a new strain of covid-19 detected in Portugal, but there is no reason to be alarmed

The Ricardo Jorge Institute detected 16 cases of the new variant of SARS-CoV-2 in continental Portugal. The new strain, which is neither more serious nor more lethal, was found in December in Madeira.

The variant detected in the United Kingdom is not more serious than the previous one, but it is more contagious and can be fought with the vaccine.

After starting the process on December 27 with the administration of the first dose of the Pfizer-BioNTech vaccine to health professionals, the Minister of Health, Marta Temido, had assured that the first phase of the vaccination campaign would be extended. to homes located in the 25 counties at extreme risk of covid-19 incidence, according to the most recent data from the General Directorate of Health (DGS).

At stake, therefore, are municipalities with a incidence rate greater than 980 cases per 100,000 inhabitants in the last 14 days, in a list that should be updated again this Monday by the DGS.

According to Marta Temido, 11 municipalities are part of the Northern Regional Health Administration (ARS) in the North, eight in the ARS do Alentejo, five in the ARS do Centro and one in the ARS in Lisbon and Vale do Tejo, also explaining what “There are about 150 residential structures for the elderly and the long-term care network” that will be covered in this new stage.

Next week the extension of vaccination in nursing homes in other municipalities is already planned.

Portugal has so far received 79,950 doses the first vaccine approved by the European Medicines Agency (EMA) and the World Health Organization (WHO) against the new coronavirus.

Over the next four weeks, other shipments of similar size are expected from Pfizer, and the schedule for the first phase of vaccination is expected to continue through April.
