First day of vaccination in Portugal

António Costa announced this Friday morning, in Brussels, at the end of the European Council, that the first day of vaccination against covid-19 in Portugal may be on January 5.

The prime minister maintains that vaccination should start at the same time throughout the European Union.

The coordinator of the National Vaccination Plan assured that Portugal will be able to vaccinate 50,000 people a day in health centers.

Francisco Ramos said that this figure can be reached without compromising the remaining activity of the units.

The first vaccines should begin to be administered in early January, one or two days after the arrival of the drugs in Portugal.

The 3rd phase of vaccination will be carried out in order of registration.

The Technical Vaccination Commission for Covid-19 foresees that the number of doses available once the first two phases have been completed for the priority vaccination groups will be enough so that specific criteria are not implemented, nor are more priority groups created in addition to those already are planned.

One of the members of the Technical Commission told Expresso that the distribution will only have to be changed if there are delays in the delivery of vaccines.

Portugal will receive 22 million doses. Priority groups are expected to receive 3.7 million doses in June.
