Musician Eddie Van Halen, guitarist and founder of the band Van Halen, passed away on Tuesday at the age of 65.

The announcement was made by his son Wolfgang, on the social network Twitter:

“I can’t believe I have to write this, but my father, Edward Lodewijk Van Halen, lost his long and difficult battle with cancer this morning. He was the best father I could wish for. Every moment I shared with him, inside and out from the stage, it was a gift My heart is broken and I don’t think I can ever recover from this loss.

Eddie Van Halen was born in Amsterdam, Holland, in 1955. In the 1960s, he moved with his family to Los Angeles, in the United States of America, where he began to study piano.

After switching to guitar, he and his older brother Alex formed several bands that would become Van Halen in the 1970s, with vocalist David Lee Roth and bassist Michael Anthony.

Van Halen is among the top 20 record-selling artists and, in 2007, the band was inducted into the ‘Rock and Rol Hall of Fame’.

Rolling Stone magazine ranked Eddie Van Halen eighth on the list of the 100 greatest guitarists.

Eddie Van Halen was a self-taught man who could play almost any instrument, but could not read music.

In 1978, the band recorded the first album “Van Halen ‘”, followed by “Van Halen II'” (1979), “Women and Children First” (1980), “Fair Warning” (1981) and “Diver Down”. (1982), among many others in the following years.

With the album “1984”, the band reached number two on the ‘Billaboard 200’, just behind Michael Jackson’s “Thriller”.
