Wales has decided to remove Portugal from the list of countries exempt from quarantine, but maintains Madeira and the Azores, announced this Thursday the Ministry of Health of the autonomous government, which applied for the first time rules other than the British Government.

Welsh Health Minister Vaughan Gething said he considered the report from the Joint Biosafety Center on countries posing a public health risk due to the covid-19 pandemic.

“I decided to remove mainland Portugal (the Azores and Madeira will remain exempt), Gibraltar, French Polynesia and the Greek islands of Mykonos, Zakynthos, Lesbos, Paros and Antiparos and Crete from the list of exempt countries and territories,” he added.

The measures take effect at 4:00 am on Friday, September 4.

This measure is being taken due to the large number of coronavirus cases imported to Wales by tourists returning from the Greek islands in particular. In the last week more than 20 cases have been confirmed in passengers on a flight from Zante to Cardiff “, justified.

Scotland has started requiring quarantine for people arriving from Greece starting today, but this is the first time the Government of Wales has adopted restrictions other than England, determined by the British government.

England keeps Portugal on the list of air brokers

Minutes earlier, British Transport Minister Grant Shapps had said that Portugal and Greece con the list of safe countries, despite speculation that they would be withdrawn.

“We continue to constantly review the list of travel brokers and we will not hesitate to eliminate countries if necessary. However, today there are no additions or deletions,” he announced through the social network Twitter.
