The Minister of Health, Marta Temido, revealed this Monday that the admissions for Covid-19 in hospitals, nursing and intensive care units (ICU), should exceed three thousand next week.

According to the projections of the National Institute of Health Doutor Ricardo Jorge (INSA) released today by the minister at a press conference, as of November 4, an estimated 2,634 patients were admitted to the ward and 444 to the ICU.

On Wednesday, the maximum number of patients hospitalized in intensive care registered in the first wave (271) should be exceeded.

Marta Temido justified this increase with the growth in the number of new cases registered in recent weeks, which especially affected people between 20 and 39 years old and over 85 years old.

I want, for example, to point out that in the week of October 12 to 18, the maximums were exceeded in almost all age groups in terms of new cases and the notification rate of the group over 85 years old exceeded the maximum observed in the week From April 20 to 26, one of the most complicated weeks ”, he explained.

The effects of this incidence in the elderly are already beginning to be felt in hospitals, with a continuous increase in the number of hospitalizations in recent days, and the expectation is that the trend will continue.

“Given the fragility of the individuals in this age group, it is considered that this situation may lead to an increase in hospitalizations and even deaths in the coming weeks,” acknowledged Marta Temido.

At the beginning of the press conference, the Minister of Health also updated the data on the risk of transmissibility of the new coronavirus (RT), which was 1.21 between October 17 and 21.

In the last 14 days, Portugal registered a cumulative rate of 23 deaths per million inhabitants and the incidence rate in the same period was 323 new cases per 100,000 inhabitants, now standing at 187.4 new cases per 100,000 inhabitants.

Mandatory mask on the street. How is the measure received?

The mandatory use of a mask in the street was approved on Friday in Parliament and will last for 70 days.

The law provides some exceptions to the rule: it exempts, for example, children under 10 years of age or people with a clinical condition that does not allow the use of the mask.

The new law only comes into force after the promulgation of the President of the Republic, but in the streets of Lisbon and Porto many are already using this protection.

Who does not respect the new regulations, risks a fine with values between 100 and 500 euros.
