The General Directorate of Health (DGS) announced this Friday the existence of 1,833 deaths and 59,457 cases of Covid-19 in Portugal, since the start of the pandemic.

The death toll rose from 1,829 to 1,833, 4 more than on Thursday. The number of infected people increased from 59,051 to 59,457, plus 406.

The number of people hospitalized is 339, 5 more than yesterday, and in intensive care there are 4 fewer patients, in a total of 40.

The number of reported patients who have recovered from Covid-19 has risen again in the last 24 hours to 42,576, 149 more than on Thursday.

DGS data indicate that the four deaths were recorded in the Lisbon and Vale do Tejo region, representing 30,609 cases (plus 194) and 677 deaths.

The World Health Organization said today that the Covid-19 vaccination will not become widespread before the middle of next year. The main reason is the proven efficacy and safety of the vaccine.

“We don’t expect widespread vaccination until the middle of next year,” spokeswoman Margaret Harris told reporters at a news conference in Geneva.

The WHO spokeswoman explains that phase 3 of the tests may “take longer”, since it is necessary “to see if the vaccine is really protective.”

A study by Children’s National Hospital in the United States, published Thursday in the Journal of Pediatrics, concluded that SARS-CoV-2 and antibodies can coexist in children.

“In most viruses, when antibody detection starts, we no longer detect the virus. But in Covid-19 we can see both. This means that children still have the potential to transmit the virus, even if the antibodies are detected. “concluded Burak Bahar, study leader and director of the Children’s National Hospital Computer Lab.

The team that carried out the study analyzed data from 33 children who tested positive for Covid-19. Of these, at least nine had antibodies and tested positive for SARS-CoV-2.

Since the study was conducted only with patients up to 22 years of age, it was not possible to know if the same occurs in adult patients.
