The new COVID-19 safety rules for Chinese airline workers are causing controversy. In a technical guide published in late November, the Civil Aviation Administration of China advises flight attendants to wear disposable diapers to avoid using airplane toilets.

The sixth edition of the Technical Guide for the Prevention and Control of Epidemics for Airlines advises employees to wear “medical masks, disposable double medical gloves, goggles, disposable caps, disposable protective clothing and disposable shoe covers.”

However, the following suggestion is raising doubts: “It is recommended that cabin professionals use disposable diapers to avoid the use of toilets with the exception of special circumstances to avoid risks of infection.”

Chinese officials have identified airplane toilets as a potential contagion point for the new coronavirus. This situation is not new, since, even before the pandemic, these spaces had been identified as the main sources of germs on an airplane, a situation that became even more worrisome with the appearance of SARS-CoV-2.

To prevent the spread of this and other viruses, some airlines are testing effective ways to avoid contact or remove germs from bathrooms. Japan’s ANA announced that it is testing a prototype to open contactless doors, while Boeing has applied a technique that cleans 99.9% of germs through the use of ultraviolet light.
