China’s top respiratory disease doctor said today that the country “defeated the current outbreak” of the new coronavirus, during a ceremony celebrating victory in eradicating Covid-19.
“We defeated the current outbreak,” proclaimed Zhong Nanshan, who was honored by Chinese President Xi Jinping.
The doctor warned, however, that the country cannot lower its guard.
Zhang became known in 2003 for his contribution to the fight against SARS – severe acute respiratory syndrome – another coronavirus that hit China at the time.

During the ceremony, at the Great Hall of the People in Beijing, three other specialists, in addition to Zhong, received the medal and the title of “Heroes of the People”. Dozens of health officials also received honorary degrees from the Chinese Communist Party.
More than half of the ceremony consisted of a speech by Xi Jinping.
“Covid-19 took us all by surprise,” said the Chinese president, who reviewed the measures taken by his country since the beginning of the pandemic, in order to contain the spread.

Health authorities ensure that the country does not have cases of local infection
The ceremony took place on the same day that the National Health Commission of China guaranteed that there is currently not a single site among the 175 cases of active infection by the new coronavirus, detailing that all are travelers from abroad.
