The General Directorate of Health (DGS) announced in the daily bulletin this Friday that there are 31 more deaths and 2,899 new cases of Covid-19 in Portugal.

The death toll rose from 2,245 to 2,276, 31 more than Thursday, the highest number of deaths in a single day since April 24, when the DGS announced 34 deaths.

The number of infected people increased from 109,541 to 112,440, another 2,899 in 24 hours.

Of the 31 deaths, 14 occurred in the north, 9 in Lisbon and Vale do Tejo, 5 in the Centro region, 2 in Alentejo and 1 in the Algarve.

As for the new cases, 1,516 are in the north, 918 in Lisbon and the Tagus valley, 364 in the Center region, 53 in Alentejo, 38 in the Algarve, 8 in Madeira and two in the Azores.

Under surveillance, 57,455 contacts remain, 1,646 more than Thursday.

Data released this Friday reveal even more 1,349 recovered cases, for a total of 65,880.

Active cases are now 44,284, 1,519 more compared to the previous day.

1,418 people are hospitalized, 53 more than on Thursday. 198 patients are admitted to the intensive care units, two less than the day before.

Confirmed cases are distributed in all age groups, with the highest number of infections between 20 and 59 years.

In total, the new coronavirus has already affected at least 51,125 men and 61,315 women in Portugal, according to declared cases.

Of the total deaths, 1,154 were men and 1,122 women.

The highest number of deaths is still concentrated in people over 80 years of age.

Parliament approved the mandatory use of a mask on the street this Friday.

The bill presented by the PSD imposes the mandatory use of a mask in public spaces for three months, renewable, and provides fines of between 100 and 500 euros for non-interpreters.

The government of the Azores decided to extend the public calamity situation in Santa María, São Miguel, Terceira, Pico and Faial until 24:00 hours on November 6 (with air connection abroad).

The executive also decided to expand “the declaration of the alert situation on the islands of Graciosa, São Jorge, Flores and Corvo until midnight on November 6.”

Portugal registered the highest number of new cases of contagion by the new coronavirus in the last seven days (16,247), with an increase of 165% compared to October 7, according to the National Institute of Statistics (INE).

The data appear in the INE publication “COVID-19: a reading of the demographic context and territorial expression of the pandemic” and show that The 16,247 new cases of infection detected in the last seven days are the highest number reached so far and correspond to 15.8 new cases per 10,000 inhabitants.

More than 1.1 million deaths worldwide

The covid-19 pandemic has already claimed more than 1,139,406 deaths and more than 41,767,540 cases of infection worldwide, according to a report by the French agency AFP at 11 a.m. today.

At least 28,531,800 were considered cured.
