The General Directorate of Health (DGS) announced in this Wednesday’s bulletin the existence of a total of 1,878 deaths and 65,626 cases of covid-19 in Portugal since the start of the pandemic.

The death toll rose from 1,875 to 1,878, 3 more than on Tuesday, all in the Lisbon region and the Tagus Valley

The number of infected people increased from 65,021 to 65,626 plus 605.

In the last 24 hours, there were 4 more hospitalizations, increasing the number of people with COVID-19 admitted to hospitals to 482, while the number of patients in intensive care units is 2 more, in a total of 61.

From yesterday to today, 166 patients have been recovered, so 44,528 people have already overcome the infection since the start of the pandemic in Portugal.

37,287 contacts are under surveillance, 332 more than on Tuesday.

Number by region

In the region of Lisbon and Tagus ValleyWith the highest number of infections in the country, 290 new cases were reported, representing 33,587 cases of contagion and 709 deaths since the start of the pandemic.

The region North today registers 201 more cases, now adding 23,729 and 859 deaths.

In the region Center There were 53 more cases, with 5,383 infections and 254 deaths recorded since the start of the pandemic.

Not Alentejo 42 more cases of covid-19 were registered, totaling 1,217 cases and 22 deaths so far.

The region of Algarve Today, 18 more cases of infection have been reported, totaling 1,277 cases and 19 deaths from covid-19.

In the autonomous community of Azores no cases have been reported in the last 24 hours, with 240 infections and 15 deaths since the pandemic began.

A Madeira has registered a new case, with 193 infections, with no deaths to date.

Gender and age groups

Confirmed cases are distributed in all age groups, with the highest number of infections between 20 and 59 years.

In total, the new coronavirus has already affected at least 29,637 men and 35,989 women in Portugal, according to reported cases.

Of the total deaths, 948 were men and 930 women.

The highest number of deaths is still concentrated in people over 80 years of age.

The month of September has seen a steady increase in new Covid-19 cases, marking a new phase of the pandemic, but there is still no talk of a second wave.

They are younger patients, which for now represents a lower risk for the National Health Service.

But the big test will come in the winter, as the age of those infected is likely to begin to increase.

Many Portuguese companies have already taken or are taking new measures for the protection and safety of their workers. The most important bet is telecommuting and teams on duty.

The covid-19 pandemic has already claimed at least 929,391 deaths and more than 29.4 million cases of infection in 196 countries and territories, according to a report by the French agency AFP.

The United States is the most affected country with 195,765 deaths. It is followed by Brazil (133,119), India (80,776), Mexico (71,049) and the United Kingdom (41,664).

Six months after the Covid-19 pandemic was declared, the world now faces the threat or, in many cases, the reality, of a second wave of infections.

But there are also countries that believe they have managed to stop it, such as Australia. The Government is now preparing to ease the restrictions imposed on citizens.
