In accordance with the recommendation addressed to the Government, “the holding of contests that call for telephone calls using numbers with prefixes 760 and 761, which are numbers with a special increased rate, compromises compliance with the Gaming Law.”

SIC and TVI reacted this Friday to the recommendation of the Ombudsman, Maria Lúcia Amaral, on the prohibition of television contests with value-added calls – lines 760/761 -, in order to protect the elderly and other groups . vulnerable. Both stations say this measure would have “a strong impact” on televisions and also result in a “significant drop” in the state’s tax revenue.

“The prohibition of conducting television contests that use calls to numbers in the range 760-761, as proposed by the Ombudsman, in the midst of a pandemic and economic and social crisis, would have a strong impact on SIC and TVI and other elements of the value chain ”, can be read in the station statement, which stresses that this measure would cause“ still a significant drop in State tax revenues ”.

In the opinion of SIC and TVI, the recommendation of the Ombudsman’s Office “lacks reasoning, is not based on objective technical elements, and omits that television operators comply with the legal framework applicable to this activity, which is subject to intervention regulation of various entities, in addition to the obligations assumed by the televisions and derived from the current self-regulation ”, it can also be read in the note.

Furthermore, the same recommendation “omits that calls to numbers in the range 760-761 were and are often used for public interest and solidarity revenue raising and awareness campaigns, with no benefit to television channels.”, add television stations.

In accordance with the recommendation addressed to the Government, “the holding of contests that require telephone calls using numbers with a prefix 760 and 761, which are numbers with a special increased rate, calls into question compliance with the Gaming Law” and “by force of the current pandemic caused by the covid-19, the confinement provides a greater availability of people to participate in this type of contests ”, can be read in the note released by the apDC.
