Several partners of the Uber platform held a march through the streets of Lisbon in order to alert them of the new tool related to the commissions made available by the operator, which they claim prevents many from working.
Speaking to Lusa, Ângela Reis, one of the members involved in the protest, explained that the march was organized from one day to the next “because, since last Thursday, Uber has made available to drivers a tool that allows them to download or raise it commissions ”.
“We were surprised by this multiplier measure. We found that many drivers dropped to a low of 0.7, which can mean a profit of 50 cents / one euro on a service, which does not even work on diesel. “, he stated.
Angela Reis has also explained that there are already many families “desperate because at 0.7 they cannot sustain the business, nor the income and that for the most part they only have one car.”
According to information from Uber, since October 29, drivers have been able to set their own rate to travel in Lisbon, where this measure began.
If drivers do not intend to change their rate, they will continue to receive ride orders at the current rate: 0.90 cents per base rate, 0.09 cents per minute and 0.59 cents per kilometer, according to Uber.
Drivers can reduce or increase their rates within a range between the multiplier of 0.7x and 2x, this multiplier applies to the base, time and distance rates, as well as the minimum rate.
Passengers will see the final price of the trip, with the indication of the multiplier defined by the driver, being able to decide to accept or reject the service.
However, what Ângela Reis has explained is currently happening is that “the car that is closest to the customer is not always the one that is sent, but the one with the lowest rate applied even though it is further away.” .
“Has no sense. In four days, there are drivers who only had one or two services because they continue to apply the same rate that they always applied “, he considered, adding that the platform itself is forcing drivers to lower the rate when sending “Systematic messages through the application saying that nearby drivers are applying 0.7 when in reality they are not.”
According to the protest organization, which passed through Highway 5, Amoreiras, Marquês de Pombal, Avenida da Liberdade, Rossio, Rua do Ouro, Av. João V and again Amoreiras, where the Uber offices are located, were in the procession nearby of 500 conductors.
A Lusa, a source from the Lisbon PSP Metropolitan Command, said that the authorities knew about and followed the protest, adding that they reported the presence of about 60 drivers.
