Seven families displaced after fire in Braga

The Braga Palace of Justice will be expanded to house the Family and Minors Court and the Labor Court, which operate in precarious facilities, the mayor announced today.

During the executive meeting, Ricardo Río added that the expansion project has already been approved by the city’s urban services and “is under development” at the Ministry of Justice.

He also said that the Administrative and Tax Court of Braga will also have new facilities, “expanding” to a building on Rua dos Granjinhos, already rented by the guardianship.

The Family and Juvenile Court will temporarily operate in this building.

According to the mayor, the three courts have been struggling for years with “precarious” facilities, a problem that has been aggravated by the covid-19 pandemic and the need to ensure adequate social distance.

The situation caused the highest sentences of the Administrative and Fiscal Court of Braga to be held, as of today and provisionally, in a room of the Vila Nova de Famalicão City Council.

The matter was taken to today’s meeting of the Braga executive by the CDU, who appealed to the need to accelerate the necessary works so that all the trials of the Administrative and Fiscal Court are held in Braga.

The PS, through the voice of councilor Artur Feio, considered that, “with a little ingenuity”, the municipality could have prevented some sentences from leaving the municipality, with the provision of rooms for this purpose.

The mayor, Ricardo Rio, said that the option for Famalicão for the trials with the greatest number of interveners was communicated to him by the president of the Administrative and Tax Court, without any “pre-approach”.

The option for Famalicão had to do with the fact that Paços do Concelho had already hosted the court, so it did not require any investment in adaptation works.

“The municipality expressed, from the beginning, all the availability to install the field in an alternative space, but there was no margin for any alternative,” he said, highlighting that it is a temporary solution, “only for these transitory circumstances.”

The PS councilor, Artur Feio, expressed “surprise” the option for Famalicão and stressed that the situation generates “great inconvenience for everyone.”
