The mayor of Braga, Ricardo Río, announced today that as of Tuesday the commercial establishments of the municipality will be able to operate until 11:00 p.m., the deadline set by the Government for the state of contingency.

“For now, the Chamber will not apply additional restrictions to the opening hours of commercial establishments, thus maintaining the hours defined in the Council of Ministers,” the mayor told Lusa.

On Thursday, the Council of Ministers decided that commercial establishments will only be able to open after 10 a.m. and must close between 8 p.m. and 11 p.m.

Each municipality is responsible for determining the exact closing time, according to the “specific reality” of each municipality.

In Braga, commercial establishments can operate until 23:00.

Portugal enters a contingency situation this Tuesday in the context of the covid-19 pandemic, due to the return to work and classes, so the Government decided to adopt preventive measures.

Regarding the opening hours of commercial establishments, there will be exceptions when they open before 10 in the morning, such as pastries, cafes, hairdressers and gyms.

The covid-19 pandemic has already claimed at least 921,097 deaths and more than 28.8 million cases of infection in 196 countries and territories, according to a report by the French agency AFP.

In Portugal, 1,867 people died out of 63,983 confirmed cases of infection, according to the most recent bulletin from the Directorate General of Health.
