Republican Senator Ted Cruz, elected by the state of Texas, is coming under fire for going to Cancun, Mexico, as Texans suffer a cold snap, which froze thermometers, cut off electricity and killed people.
Given the amount of criticism, Ted Cruz returned to the United States. Several images of the senator, apparently dated Wednesday, show him wearing jeans, a short-sleeved shirt, athletic shoes and a mask with the Texas flag – with a single star – at the airport and on the plane bound for Mexico. The photos went viral on social media.
These images contrast with the situation in Texas, where millions of people are without heating due to lack of light, while lines multiply for people to get water or propane gas.
Local media said the senator traveled with his family on Wednesday to the Mexican Caribbean coast, where temperatures range between 25 and 28 degrees Celsius this week, while the storm affected Texas.
Such was the reaction on social media that Cruz had to return to the United States on Thursday afternoon.
“Like millions of Texans, our family has also lost heat and electricity,” Cruz said in a statement.
“With school canceled this week – he argued – our daughters asked to take a trip with friends. Wanting to be a good father, I flew with them at night and came back this afternoon ”Thursday.
Additionally, on Monday, Cruz called on Texans to stay home during an interview with Joe “Pags” Show on a San Antonio, Texas radio station, adding that he was happy because at home, in Houston, there was electricity.
“Don’t take risks, keep your family safe, stay home and hug your children,” Cruz recommended.
