Ryanair “decided, incomprehensibly and without any managerial criteria, to start a new collective dismissal process, now at the Lisbon Base, in which six crew members participated, who curiously refused to sign, despite pressure from Ryanair, an addendum that, like the union warned at that time, is illegal, ”warns SNPVAV – National Union of Civil Aviation Flight Personnel to Jornal Economico. It is recalled that the SNPVAC learned that Ryanair resumed, “on December 1, the process of collective dismissal of cabin crew at the Oporto base, affecting 23 crew members.”

Ricardo Peñarroias, director of SNPVAC with the role of Ryanair, explained to JE that “this situation fits with the way of acting of Ryanair, which at the same time that it reveals that it will buy 50 more Boeing aircraft, it also advances with the reduction of crew only to reduce operating costs ”. Just this week, the CEO of Ryanair said during an online conference promoted by JE that he was waiting to receive a new order for planes and that if he could operate more slots in Portuguese airports, he could put 20 or 30 more flights to Portugal. of these new planes.

The SNPVAC considers that “this process is nothing more than retaliation against the crew involved, and completely refutes the argument that there is an excess of crew at the bases in Portugal”, and recalls, once again, that “the company could opt for the measures provided for in the law, as it did in April and May, and that would mitigate its costs, without having to resort to dismissal ”.

This latest decision by Ryanair is understood as “a lack of respect on the part of the SNPVAC Management, which feels cheated, given that in recent weeks it has shown total willingness to dialogue, dialogue, negotiate, although for this it had to go more beyond certain statutes, since we believed that the two institutions would be truly committed to the search for a serious and credible solution to avoid layoffs ”.

This new collective dismissal follows the public announcement by Ryanair, of “the increase in flights to Porto in December and January, as a result of the increase in demand this Christmas”, in addition to the disclosure of the “acquisition of 75 Boeing 737 Max , which shows the growth outlook from next year, given that Ryanair CEO Michael O’Leary expected to receive 50 aircraft of this model from 2021, ”says SNPVAC.

The union says that Ryanair intends to “use crew members from other bases in dismissal, to make up for the shortage of workers at the bases in Portugal, caused by the increase in the number of flights”, while it is “conducting training courses for new crew members” , adding that “the latest forecasts point to an effective recovery from 2021, greatly influenced by the appearance of the vaccine, which led to a strong increase in demand and reserves.”

At the same time, the SNPVAC management questions how “Ryanair reached an agreement with other professional classes of the company, because if the Ryanair crew was always receptive and available to seek fair and equitable solutions, that is, lower wages, resort to part-time and even leave without pay ”. “What else should cabin crew members abdicate from? Your rights enshrined in Portuguese law? questions the union.

The low-cost Irish company “continues to toast us with its claims of disrespect for the country and its laws. The recent statements of its president about an institution like ACT and its inspectors are a clear demonstration of the arrogance and arrogance with which this company faces our country and all this with the acceptance and collusion of both the autarchies, the economic groups as well as the state itself. ”Says the SNPVAC.

SNPVAC awaits the appointment of the hearing requested from the Minister of Infrastructure and Housing, Pedro Nuno Santos, to “denounce what it considers an authentic attack on a class, as well as, once again, denounce the total collusion of regional institutions. and nationals of this country, who allow a company that constantly violates the law to receive incentives and subsidies, harming national companies that comply with the law ”.
