Russia breaks new record and bull run ends

Russia has carte blanche to return to work this Tuesday. Vladimir Putin’s announcement ended six weeks of confinement, but only conditionally, since the Russian president left the management of the process and the lifting of restrictions in the hands of each regional government.

Putin emphasized that the fight against the covid-19 should continue and boasted of the work already done:

“These extraordinary measures have allowed us to stop the spread of the epidemic and thus save some time. Thanks to these measures, which were adopted beforehand, we were able to save, and I can say without exaggeration, we were able to save several thousand lives.”

Putin’s decision contrasts with the coldness of the numbers. On Monday, Russia recorded a record daily number of cases, with 11,656 new infections in 24 hours. The country now has more than 220,000 documented cases of covid-19, having overtaken Italy in all patients.

The number of deaths is just over two thousand, but a report by Novaya Gazeta, which compared monthly deaths with the average from previous years, suggests that the actual number may be three times higher.

The mayor of the city of Moscow himself, Sergei Sobyanin, had already admitted that the number of cases in the capital could be up to three times greater than official figures.
