The Italian Giovani Visconti (Vini Zabù-KTM) withdrew this Thursday from the Tour of Italy by bicycle, due to an injury, and brought the Portuguese Ruben Guerreiro (Education First) closer to the triumph in the classification of the mountain.
“Giovani Visconti will not go to the 18th stage of the Giro, from Pinzolo to Laghi di Cancano. The Sicilian rider has suffered from patellar tendonitis for several days, which was treated after yesterday’s stage. [quarta-feira], but this morning he had pain again, even going down the stairs, which made us decide to abandon it ”, reads the statement from Vini Zabù-KTM.
Guerreiro ‘dethroned’ Visconti from the Giro mountain classification this Wednesday, adding 198 points, against 148 of the Italian, who was the main ‘rival’ of the natural cyclist of Pegões, in the municipality of Montijo.
Belgian Thomas De Gendt (Lotto Soudal) climbed to second place in this hierarchy, with 82 points, starting today from the 207 kilometers of today’s stage, 18, which has four mountain counts, one of the special category, in the Stelvio, a second and two first, the last of which coincides with the goal.
The Portuguese João Almeida (Deceuninck-QuickStep) wears the pink jersey, symbol of leadership in the race, from the third stage, having started today’s draw 17 seconds ahead of the Dutch Wilco Kelderman (Sunweb).
